The Minister of Environment, Water and Climate Hon Saviour Kasukuwere has appointed Kirsty Coventry as the country’s pangolin ambassador.
In his appointment letter Minister Kasukuwere said the appointment is with effect from the 1st of January and is effective for three year term.
He added that the responsibility has been bestowed on Kirsty because of her passion for wildlife and the pride with which she represents the nation in other activities. He said he is confident that she will represent Zimbabwe’s wildlife with equal pride and make a positive impact towards conservation of the country’s wildlife.
Pangolins are specially protected and are threatened by extinction because of massive illegal trafficking going on. It is illegal to remove pangolins from their natural habitat for whatever reason. The illegal killing and illegal possession of a pangolin carries a mandatory nine year sentence.
In 2014 10 people were arrested after they were found with pangolins they had removed from the wild.
